Strip Brushes — Custom Manufactured to Any Length, Any Bristle

A strip brush — also called a brush seal, channel brush or metal-backed brush — is the
workhorse of industrial sealing, cleaning and edge protection. Manybrush manufactures
to your exact channel dimensions, bristle spec and length, from a 100 mm sensor seal to
a 5 m conveyor skirt.

Construction & Options

Two decisions define the product: the backing, and the bristle.

Backing / Channel Types

Type Material Best For
Metal channel, galvanised Standard strip profile General sealing, guarding, dust control
Metal channel, stainless 304 / 316 Food, pharma, washdown, corrosive environments
Aluminum Extruded profile Lightweight guarding, long spans
PVC / plastic Co-extruded Low-cost sealing, non-marring contact
H-profile / U-profile Per application Door seals, guide tracks
Single-stem, double-stem, bespoke Per drawing Non-standard mounting

Bristle Materials

Material Diameter Temp Typical Use
Nylon 6.6 0.10 – 1.30 mm up to 120 °C General sealing, dust, gentle contact
Polypropylene (PP) 0.15 – 1.00 mm up to 90 °C Wet environments, chemical resistance
Abrasive nylon (SiC) 0.40 – 1.00 mm up to 120 °C Deburring, surface prep
Conductive / anti-static 0.20 – 0.60 mm — Static dissipation
Carbon steel wire 0.10 – 0.60 mm — Aggressive cleaning, high temp
Stainless wire (304/316) 0.08 – 0.50 mm up to 400 °C Food, corrosion, high temp
Brass / copper wire 0.10 – 0.30 mm — Non-sparking, electrical
Horsehair / hog bristle Natural up to 80 °C Delicate surfaces, heritage work
Sisal Natural — Polishing, natural-fibre dusting
PBT / polyester 0.15 – 0.80 mm — Wet applications, good recovery

Dimensions

Channel width 4 – 40 mm (standard profiles)
Channel height 5 – 25 mm
Bristle trim length 5 – 150 mm
Overall length Continuous — 100 m coils or pre-cut pieces
Bristle density Light / standard / dense / extra-dense

Core Applications

Eight of the most common uses — if yours is not here, it is probably a variation of one of them.

Door & Gate Sealing

On industrial doors, rolling shutters, dock doors and cleanroom entries — blocks dust, drafts, insects and light.

Conveyor Skirting

Mounted along the belt edge to prevent material spillage, or over the belt to remove carryback.

Machinery Guards

Fills the gap between moving parts and fixed frames — an inexpensive way to close a pinch point.

Dust & Air Gap Stops

In HVAC and powder handling, strip brushes act as air gap stops without the friction of a solid seal.

Escalator Skirts

The industry-standard deflector brush, preventing debris entry and shoe entrapment.

Food Processing

Stainless backing plus FDA-compliant nylon; lifts product from belts without scratching.

Static Dissipation

Conductive bristles on packaging lines and electronics assembly to prevent ESD damage.

Deburring & Finishing

Abrasive-filled nylon strip brushes on automated deburring stations.

The Three Variables That Decide If It Works

Most buyers specify channel width and bristle length and stop there. These three determine the outcome.

1. Bristle projection

Rule: projection = gap + 10–20%.

Less and the brush does not contact. More and the bristles splay, drag increases, and filament fatigues early.

2. Density

Density is filament count per unit length, not “how thick it looks.”

  • Light ~700/100 mm — guiding
  • Standard ~1,000 — general sealing
  • Dense ~1,400 — dust, guarding
  • Extra-dense ~1,900+ — fine powder, food

3. Mounting support

A strip brush spanning more than about 1,000 mm without intermediate support will sag and deflect in service.

Specify support clips or rigid backing every 500–800 mm.

Custom Manufacturing Process

From your drawing to a shipped coil, usually inside four weeks.

No tooling cost if your spec matches one of our 300+ existing profiles. That is the single biggest variable in strip brush lead time and price.

  • In-house tufting, channel forming, cutting and end-trimming — no subcontracting
  • Any length, any density — built to order, not to a fixed catalog
  • Free engineering advice on projection, density and interference fit
  • REACH / RoHS material declarations and ISPM-15 compliant packing
  1. Send your specDrawing, sample, or photo with dimensions and application.
  2. Engineering review — 24 hWe confirm channel profile, bristle spec and mounting.
  3. Quotation — 1 dayIncluding tooling if a bespoke profile is needed.
  4. Sample — 5–7 daysFor standard profiles.
  5. Approval → production — 15–25 daysDimensional report plus optional third-party inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a strip brush and a brush seal?

They are the same product — “brush seal” is used when the function is sealing
(doors, air gaps) and “strip brush” when the function is cleaning or guiding. Construction is identical.

Can you make a strip brush to a very specific channel size?

Yes. Send the channel width, height and wall thickness, or a cross-section
drawing. For profiles that require a new extrusion or roll-forming die, we will quote the tooling cost and
lead time up front.

What bristle projection should I choose?

General rule: bristle projection should be 10–20% longer than the gap you need
to seal, so the bristles deflect and create contact without excess drag. For high-speed applications, use a
shorter, denser trim to reduce flutter.

How do I specify bristle density?

Either by the standard designation (light / standard / dense / extra-dense) or by
filament count per unit length. For sealing against fine dust, extra-dense is usually necessary.

What is the maximum length you can supply?

Continuous lengths are limited by shipping, not by production. We regularly ship
50–100 m coils and cut to length on site.

Do you supply the mounting hardware?

Yes — aluminum or steel hold-down plates, end caps and fixing clips are available
with the brush.

Can you supply food-grade / FDA-compliant strip brushes?

Yes. Stainless steel 304/316 backing with FDA-compliant nylon or PP bristle, plus
material declarations for your audit file.
